The structure book of the Huntington Beach Central Library (HBCL) mimics brutalist architecture, with its sharp, angular geometric structures and grayscale, monochromatic color palette. The body copy is of a heavy and loud sans serif, whereas the typography for the main heading has contrasting thicks and thins and is more-so delicate to tie in with the nature-oriented bio-realist architectural style. Brutalism comes with an emphasis on the bare functionality and geometry of materials, which is emulated in the book through a repetition in design elements, such as the recurring rectilinear edges and triangular flaps layered on top. Additionally, the accordion book is made to be versatile with its ability to morph into different shapes found at the library, like a star, a bookshelf, a staircase, or a simple card or wallet holder for one to store their library card.
